Friday May 27: Music & Obsession - Scott Hicks
Scott Hicks is a writer, director, producer, photographer and documentary-maker who gained international acclaim in 1996 for Shine which was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, 5 Golden Globes, 9 BAFTAS and won 9 AFI awards including Best Film. After Shine a succession of Hollywood studio films followed including; Snow Falling on Cedars (with Ethan Hawke), Hearts in Atlantis (Anthony Hopkins), The Lucky One (Zac Efron) The Boys Are Back (Clive Owen) and the supernatural romance Fallen--which has just completed post and is slated for release later this year.
With a track record of journeying into the world of triumph and heartbreak that is the music world Scot Hicks body of work includes the biopic Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts (2007) and Highly Strung, a feature doco about rare musical instruments which premiered at the Adelaide Film festival in late 2015. Documentaries are a significant part of Scott Hick’s practice for which he has won a Peabody and an Emmy and obsession is what documentaries are all about according to the filmmaker who has said that his own filmmaking passion is ignited by music obsession stories. Friday on My Mind host Giles Hardie and the multi-award winning and internationally regarded director will delve into and discuss creative drivers, inspiration and motivators along with the recurring themes of music, musicians and obsession.
