Do your research when preparing for an interview; know your industry leaders and luminaries. Research the work of the person interviewing you, make it your business to know their last job, awards they have won, the people they have worked and still work with. Have a compliment ready commenting on how you loved their work on a particular project.
Know Yourself – when you are networking or in an interview situation you need to be able to explain succinctly what you are about
Know your etiquette - Whatever the environment, on a set or post production, there is an etiquette. Know it and follow it! You can find a wealth of information on the net about this or simply ASK
Attitude is EVERYTHING - Be positive and enthusiastic no matter how menial a task may seem
Use your initiative – you are more likely to work your way up the ladder faster by seeing what needs doing without being asked first
Subjects you should study to work in the Art or Costume Department on a screen production include Art, Design and Technology, Textiles and Design, History, Geography, Maths. These subjects provide a sound basis upon which to build your knowledge of the real world that screen designers draw upon to create imaginary ‘story worlds’ and costumes for their characters.
